Shopify and WooCommerce run a huge share of the world’s online stores, and both work well in Pakistan. But they are built on very different ideas, and the right one for you depends on your budget, your team and how you plan to sell. This guide compares them on what actually matters for a Pakistani store: costs, cash on delivery, local payments, couriers and selling abroad.
Key takeaways
- Shopify is the fastest to launch and the least work to maintain, but its plan is billed monthly in USD.
- WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin with full control, but you pay for hosting and look after updates yourself.
- Both handle COD, bank transfer, local couriers and international selling with the right setup.
- Choose on your time, team and growth plans — not on which platform is more popular.
The quick answer
Choose Shopify if you want to launch quickly, don’t have anyone technical in your team, and want hosting, security and checkout handled for you. Choose WooCommerce if you already run a WordPress website, want to avoid a dollar subscription, or need a store that blends deeply with a content-heavy site. The rest of this guide explains the trade-offs behind that advice.
How Shopify and WooCommerce differ
Shopify is a hosted platform: you pay a subscription and Shopify runs the servers, the checkout and the security. You customise the store with themes and apps, but you can’t change how the platform works underneath.
WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin that turns a WordPress website into a store. You choose your own hosting — including Pakistani hosts billed in rupees — and you can change almost anything, but updates, backups and security are your responsibility or your developer’s.
Costs compared
| Cost | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Monthly or yearly plan in USD | Free plugin |
| Hosting | Included | You buy hosting; quality matters a lot for speed |
| Theme | Free or one-time premium theme | Free or one-time premium theme |
| Extensions | Apps, often billed monthly | Plugins, often a one-time or yearly licence |
| Transaction fees | Extra Shopify fee on orders paid through third-party gateways; none on COD or bank transfer | Only your payment gateway’s own fees |
| Maintenance | Handled by Shopify | Updates, backups and security by you or your developer |
The build itself costs about the same on either platform. At Pixvion, Shopify or WooCommerce stores start from Rs 54,000, and custom-designed stores from Rs 108,000.
Payments in Pakistan
On Shopify, cash on delivery and bank transfer are built-in manual payment methods. Shopify Payments isn’t available in Pakistan, so cards and mobile wallets go through third-party providers listed for Pakistan in your admin — and Shopify adds its own transaction fee on those orders. Our guide to starting a Shopify store in Pakistan walks through the setup.
On WooCommerce, plugins add JazzCash, Easypaisa and bank transfer at checkout. The simplest ones just show your account details for a manual transfer; others connect to a merchant account so payments are confirmed automatically. Card payments come through your bank’s or gateway’s WooCommerce plugin.
Couriers, COD and order confirmation
Both platforms connect to Pakistani couriers such as TCS, Leopards, Trax and PostEx — Shopify through apps in its App Store, WooCommerce through plugins or the courier’s own API. Either way you can book parcels, print labels and send tracking numbers from your store.
For COD-heavy stores, the bigger win is an order confirmation step: a WhatsApp or SMS message that asks the customer to confirm before you dispatch. It cuts returned parcels on both platforms.
Speed, security and maintenance
Shopify stores are hosted on Shopify’s global infrastructure, so speed and security are largely taken care of. WooCommerce can be just as fast, but only on good hosting with caching, optimised images and a lean set of plugins. Cheap shared hosting is the most common reason a WooCommerce store feels slow — and slow stores lose both customers and Google rankings.
Selling outside Pakistan
Shopify Markets lets one store show local currencies, translated content and separate domains or subfolders per country. WooCommerce does the same with multi-currency and multilingual plugins. On both, you also need international shipping rates and a payment option that accepts international cards.
Wholesale and B2B
Both platforms can run wholesale stores with apps or plugins for tiered pricing, minimum order quantities and quote requests. If you are a manufacturer or exporter with complex pricing, approvals or ERP integration, a custom B2B portal is often the better long-term choice.
Which should you choose?
| Choose Shopify if… | Choose WooCommerce if… |
|---|---|
| You want to launch in days, not weeks | You already have a WordPress website |
| Nobody in your team handles technical updates | You want to avoid a monthly USD subscription |
| You sell consumer products and run ads | You need deep customisation or a content-heavy site |
| You want hosting and security handled for you | You have a developer for updates and backups |
